Understanding the Importance of Detoxing + My Story

The human body has a built in natural detoxifying system. The detoxification organs known as the liver, kidneys, lungs, intestines and lymphatic system work together internally to "clean out" harmful toxins in your body.

In our daily lives, there is excessive toxic exposure in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the foods we eat and also the amount of stress our body undergoes and recovers from. With this increase, our internal systems have an overwhelming amount of work to do to keep the body working properly so that a build up of toxins doesn't occur and cause disease. Cleansing the body has become an important part of the way we live today. 

Detoxes aid the body in cleaning out the detoxification organs so they can do their job more effectively and efficiently. When your organs are working properly, you will be free of issues like allergies and autoimmune disorders. 

It is important every once and a while to take a step back and analyze how you are feeling. Do you feel slugglish? Do you carry unwanted weight? Is your skin healthy? Here are a few signs that there is a toxin build up in your body and may be time to clean house:

  • Weight gain

  • Cravings

  • Poor Digestion

  • Allergies

  • Rashes

  • Itching skin

  • Swollen hands or feet

  • Water retention

  • PMS

  • Breast swelling or tenderness

  • Headaches

  • Swelling around the abdomen

There are so many different modalities to detox your body. When choosing how you are going to detox, here are a few things to take into consideration.

1. Choose a detox that will set you up for success, not failure. In other words, you do not have to go cold turkey and start a fast for 5 days. If you have never fasted before, a 5 day detox fast may not be the best option for you. Something a little more gentle and familiar to your body may be appropriate.

2. Find a time to detox when you are not too busy. Your body is going to undergo lots of change which may cause you to need more rest or reflection time.

3. Have a support system to help through this time period. Detoxing is not easy at all and you may find yourself at a time of weakness and want to give up. Having someone there for you can help!

My Detox Story.

I did a bone broth cleanse after Memorial Day. I make my own bone broth from grass fed bones, organic vegetables and herbs and ingest that for a full 24 hours. Bone broth is full of disease fighting nutrients. It allows your digestive system to rest and heal from the damages of everyday life. By substituting nutrient dense bone broth for your normal meals, you are giving your gut the opportunity to reset and detoxify the other systems of the body. 

I started the cleanse that Tuesday. Having to work the day, I felt that the bone broth was best as it helped me sustain my energy while cleaning my insides as well.

I brought my broths to work and carried on with my day. By about noon, (my day starts at 6:30am), I was getting a bit foggy and was having a hard time concentrating. Luckily I left work at 2pm and was able to head home to rest. That afternoon, I started to feel nauseous and had a headache. I laid down for a nap and woke up 3 hours later feeling much better. These are true signs of detoxing where the body is literally flushing out toxins and learning to recover.

It happened to be a full moon that night and I met with a friend to watch it rise. As we sat on the top of a rock ledge, I realized that detoxing from certain things in our life is essential. I took a look at what I wanted to remember after this period of cleansing is over. I decided it was sugar. It may sound cliche but I discovered how much my body had been living on sugar by how painful it was to take it away. We consume so much sugar in a day that our lives start to revolve around it!!

I never realized how much of a problem I had with sugar because I have always gotten away with it. I was thin. Athletic. Clear skin. But couldn't go a night without it. After removing it, which trust me was not easy, I could see how it was literally controlling part of my life. I would mask my love of sugar with the idea that I just loved the decadence of chocolate. But I couldn't eat just one rich square. At night, I would eat dinner and relax with my sugar. I could even pass on intimacy for sugar. 

The sugar epidemic is a serious problem. Look at these statistics.

"Studies show that in 1700, the average person consumed approximately 4.9 grams of sugar each day (1.81 kg per year). In 2009, 50 per cent of Americans consumed approximately 227 grams of sugar each day - equating to 81.6 kg per year."

Each year it is getting worse and worse. The side effects of sugar are also endless from diabetes to ADHD in children to interrupted sleep to obesity. 

Detoxing from sugar is difficult. It has been my best friend since I can remember. I have never believed that cutting something out of your diet completely is the answer to health, but I never want to have a relationship with it like I have for the past 29 years ever again. It was abusive, co-dependent and unfulfilling.
