Everyone gets excited when the pumpkin ales come out and apple cider is in season. There is a method for why companies promote certain products during a specific time of year. I know beer isn’t exactly the best example of a natural, healthy product but it is a perfect case where this flavor is only offered when the product is in season or able to be harvested. (I also happen to love mixing pumpkin beer with apple cider :)
In this day and age, our bodies have become disconnected with seasonal eating because so many products in our grocery store are available year round shipped from different climates around the world. As the weather changes in our region and the temperature starts to drop our bodies start to slowly contract in order to conserve and create body heat. Our bodies have a very strong connection with the foods we eat that effects the mind, energy and how we feel every day. It is interesting that our bodies also have a strong connection to the earth and have many similarities to animals and plants. Just as trees shed their leaves and become dormant in the winter, our bodies have a similar effect. It is the same thing with animals that hibernate in the winter.
So what does this have to do with nutrition and health? Well, eating consciously with foods that are produced seasonally has a great impact on our energy levels, immune system and everyday health. Do you ever notice yourself craving warm, hearty stews and heavier foods during the cooler seasons? It is your body’s natural response to conserving energy for the long, cold days ahead. As fall and winter quickly come, we should turn to nature to be our guide.
Here are some tips to help your body adapt to the cooler seasons and eat more in tune with the earth.
1.There is less natural light as the sun sets earlier which means our bodies need more rest and nourishment to make up for the lack of sunlight. Allow yourself to get extra sleep and supplement more vitamin D
2. Fruits are less abundant which is it the earth’s message saying fewer of these foods. Skip the out on the cooler, raw foods and opt for warmer options. These will tax your immune system and force the body to work harder to bring the internal temperature back to homeostasis (I will add a list below)
3. Foods that are heartier will strengthen the blood and kidneys to keep us warm and healthy.
For those of you who are familiar with the Paleo diet, you are on the right track. Take a look at what our ancestors ate and what foods would most likely be able to grow in your region during this season. Follow this guide and I strongly suggest buying a Crock Pot. It makes for easier meals that are warm and delicious when you get home :)
Best Foods for the Season:
Root vegetable, Leafy greens, squash, quinoa, pumpkin, walnuts, herbs and warm spices like Cinnamon, garlic and onion, sea salt, meats and heavier fishes like Salmon.

"It's like, it's like your rib cage is a jail cell, holding all that love in. So, I want you to take your fist, take your fist, and grab your heart and hold it in the air, hold that love in the air and open your fingers, one at a time if you need to, and let that love out. " #loveart

I don't think I have ever felt as at home as as I do here. I think back on all of the cities, the apartments and places I have lived. I used come back from California wishing that I lived there. This time I came back craving these mountains and this awesome, alive community. Home is where your heart is. Mine really is here. #colorado #grassaintgreener #wineaintsweeter #welcomehomehunny

The Hollywood shows were amazing. Unfortunately there was a threat in the middle of the first show that had my heart in my throat. The interesting thing as I reflect was that my fear was actually for @bobweir And @deadandcompany . And my fellow neighbors. I truly felt it for my life last. These lessons are learned through the message of this music. Despite it all, the energy from this crowd was peaceful and alive. I am so thankful for finding this music and for my two friends who helped me get there. #pleasespreadpeace #wavethatflagwaveitwideandhigh #grateful ✌️
