Happy New Year: Turning Pro

September is like New Years. Europeans return from their August vacations, businesses and schools find their structure again and the city starts to hustle. I love this transition from warm to cool. I love the place that sporadic kayaking trips and roof-deck drinks took during the warm and I equally love the more steady flow of a schedule that will take their place. I love the unstructured taking precedence over the structure. But now it’s time to turn pro again.

I remember the first time I read “War of Art” by Steven Pressfield (I highly recommend buying the book here) . It was just about this season. And it changed my life. I had just quit a steady paycheck job to begin my own company. Thank God I read that book- because otherwise my excuses would still be excuses.

We all have a job to be done. Something that burns inside of you to be lit. And opened. Something that feels so good and natural when you do it but also scares the shit out of you and takes every ounce of energy to quiet down.

Turning pro. That’s what this New Years is all about. Are you ready??

How much longer are you willing to run from this job? Have you been hiding from it for so long that you don't even know what it is? Have you shut off the voice that speaks to you? The dreams that you think are just dreams like a child would have?

No. they are not wild or unrealistic like your advisors may say. They are your soul’s desire and the only way you can feed it is by turning pro.

Now don’t quit your day job just yet. You need that. Turning pro is a journey of many steps. And we will go through them together. But we first have to start at step one.

What is it that you have been unsuccessful at achieving? What is your BHAG (big, hairy audacious goal)? Is it getting to under 200lbs? Is it running for 3 miles straight? Is it branching from your company to start something of your own? Is it to paint?

Take a second to write down what it is that is burning inside of you. Do you want to wait another year or are you ready to do this?

This is day one. Here we go.

“Turning pro is free, but it is not easy. You don’t need to take a course or buy a product. All you have to do is change your mind.” Steven Pressfield
